The History & Why Norwescap Celebrates Juneteenth
Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th, marking the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free—a full two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation which had legally freed slaves in the Southern states. Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth commemorates when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to make the delayed announcement. Why such a delay in communication? It was due to the slow spread of information and resistance from slaveholders. But in our current times of social sharing, let’s be intentional in the spreading of good news!
Just as the news brought joyous celebrations and spontaneous gatherings 159 years ago, with former slaves celebrating their newfound freedom with prayer, feasting, song, and dance – the tradition continues. Over the years, Juneteenth has evolved into a day of reflection, education, and celebration of African American culture and achievements. This day is a powerful reminder of the long, ongoing struggle for justice and equality in America.
Juneteenth is more than a historical milestone; it is a celebration of resilience, culture, and progress. It is a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and justice. This day honors the strength and perseverance of African Americans and serves as a platform to educate and inspire future generations.

Why Juneteenth Matters to Norwescap
Norwescap is deeply committed to addressing systemic racism and promoting equality. As the administrator of “The H3AL Network,” a Black advocacy group, we take an intersectional approach to collective healing. H3AL (Highlighting Equality & Equity through Education, Advocacy & Love) is dedicated to empowering the Black community and providing resources to foster positive community outcomes and growth.
Our mission at Norwescap aligns perfectly with the spirit of Juneteenth. We believe that by acknowledging the past and educating ourselves, we can pave the way for a better future. The work of combating systemic oppression requires continuous effort and dedication. We strive to be proactive in addressing racism and its impact on our communities.

The Myth of the Zero-Sum Game in Racial Justice
In her 2021 book The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together, Heather McGhee challenges the pervasive notion of the zero-sum game, where gains for one group must come at the expense of another. McGhee argues that this belief is not only false but also detrimental to societal progress. She explains that the zero-sum mentality fuels division and hinders collective growth. Instead, McGhee proposes that addressing systemic racism and inequality can lead to widespread benefits, creating a more prosperous and equitable society for all.
“Zero-sum” is a term used to describe a situation in which any gain by one party must come at an equivalent loss to another party. It originates from game theory and economics, where it refers to scenarios where the total amount of resources remains constant, and one person’s gain is exactly balanced by another person’s loss. In broader contexts, such as social and economic policies, the zero-sum concept implies that benefits to one group necessarily come at the expense of another. This belief fosters a competitive rather than collaborative approach to resource distribution, suggesting that improving conditions for one group means worsening conditions for another. This perspective can hinder efforts toward equity and inclusion by creating opposition to changes that are perceived as taking away from those who are more privileged.

One of McGhee’s compelling examples is the story of public pools in the United States during the 20th century. When desegregation laws mandated that public pools be accessible to all races, many communities chose to fill in or close the pools rather than allow Black people to swim alongside white people. This decision deprived everyone of a valuable public resource. McGhee highlights that the zero-sum thinking led to a loss for the entire community, not just the Black residents. By contrast, had the pools remained open to all, the shared enjoyment and health benefits would have enriched the community as a whole.
McGhee also explores the broader economic implications of this mindset. She cites studies showing that closing the racial wealth gap would significantly boost the U.S. economy. For instance, if the average Black household had the same amount of wealth as the average white household, the entire economy would grow by an estimated $1.5 trillion by 2028. This demonstrates that fighting racial inequities can lead to shared prosperity, rather than taking away from any group. As McGhee eloquently puts it, “There’s no need to choose between what’s good for Black people and what’s good for the country. What’s good for Black people is good for the country.”
By debunking the zero-sum myth, McGhee encourages a shift towards an inclusive mindset where dismantling racism is seen as a collective benefit. She emphasizes that when we lift up the most marginalized, we all rise. This perspective aligns with Norwescap’s Anti-Racism Resolution to address racial disparities and promote social justice through our work empowering individuals and families as they move from challenges towards a thriving future. As our mission was developed in 1965 through the values imbued during our Civil Rights Movement, it aligns with debunking the zero-sum theory, which suggests that gains for one group come at the expense of another. We believe that all of humanity can prosper when we care for one another and create equal opportunities for everyone. By working proactively together to dismantle systemic oppressions still present, we can create a more equitable society that benefits everyone, proving that the fight for racial justice is a win-win for all communities. Norwescap is committed to creating a more just and equitable society. We are dedicated to driving progress in the communities we serve. Our commitment to our community is unwavering, and we strive to support individuals on their journeys to stability.
In observance of Juneteenth, Norwescap offices are closed. Join us in celebrating freedom, history, and community as we work towards a more just and equitable society for all.

Just as April began, Norwescap launched the month with a remarkable event: Agency Training Day. This event, a cornerstone of Norwescap’s annual calendar, brought together a majority of our staff—approximately two-thirds—from across New Jersey and Pennsylvania for a day of empowerment, education, and team building.
Imagine a bustling banquet hall filled with over 200 passionate individuals, all dedicated to a singular cause—creating positive change across our five serving counties, and amongst our diverse programming from childhood education found in our Early Head Start to Housing, to Senior Services. This is Norwescap, an organization that embodies the spirit of collaboration, compassion, and growth!
At this year’s Agency Training Day, our staff immersed themselves in the EPIC (Education, Participation, Intention & Courage) Art Gallery showcased in the main foyer, where the vibrant creativity of our BIPOC youth shone brightly. This ‘traveling gallery’ is available for public display—reach out to Program Director Dianna Morrison for the latest whereabouts.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging
Following this, a captivating panel discussion titled “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging: Looking to the Past and Forward to the Future” took place, featuring esteemed board members Scott Paul, Charles Boddy, and special guest, Esther Dillard, who delved into pressing issues of diversity, anti-racism, and the evolving landscape of marginalized communities. This was not merely a passive exchange of ideas; it required the active participation of the audience who submitted their questions, ensuring that the dialogue was inclusive, engaging, and reflective of the diverse perspectives within Norwescap’s fold.
Norwescap – it’s a movement!
As the morning progressed and Norwescap staff had the opportunity to choose from a variety of breakout sessions, with interactive and engaging workshops designed to empower and enlighten. Some sessions included Combating Compassion Fatigue, Demystifying Data Collection, The Importance of Cultivating a Growth Mindset, and Delivering Legendary Service.
Throughout the day, staff at Norwescap rediscovered the underlying sense of purpose and impact that defines our work. This event underscored that Norwescap transcends being just an organization; it’s a movement—a force for good that empowers individuals, transforms communities, and ignites hope in those who need it most. For anyone outside of our staff considering recommending our services, donating to our cause, or even volunteering your time, this is the key takeaway we hope to inspire in you.
Whether you’re passionate about social justice, economic empowerment, or simply making a difference in the world, Norwescap is a place of open arms, inviting you to join us as we continue our journey towards a more equitable and inclusive future—one where every individual is empowered to thrive, and every community is supported with dignity and respect. We’re doing our best to turn dreams into reality and create lasting change for generations to come and invite you to join us on in our mission.

Our day continued with another standout session, “Norwescap Has a Dream,” drew inspiration from Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic speech, fostering intimate discussions on dismantling systemic racism and fostering an antiracist world. It’s further testament to Norwescap’s unwavering commitment to equity and justice, both within the organization and beyond. Norwescap offered invaluable insights and practical tools to navigate the challenges of today’s world, allowing staff to learn how to unleash their full potential to leave a lasting impact on those they serve.
Team #OneNorwescap!
But it was not all serious discussions and soul-searching. Amidst the day’s enriching sessions, there were moments of silliness and connection, such as the lively lunchtime gathering and the infamous group photo—a testament to the bonds forged within our staff. The laughter and chaos surrounding a photo shoot of over 200 people can’t be captured in just 1 picture, we promise – this photo can’t be summed up in 1,000 words.
Additionally, there were moments of recognition and appreciation as staff members received VALUE Awards and Longevity Awards. It was a joyous occasion, celebrating the dedication and hard work of our team, highlighted by the presentation of a Longevity Award to staff members who have devoted up to an incredible 40 years to Norwescap! These awards truly reflect the unwavering commitment and passion that define our Norwescap team.

Until Next Year..
As the curtains closed on Norwescap’s Agency Training Day, we felt a convergence of minds and hearts. Echoing Norwescap’s core values of Creating Opportunity, Changing Lives– we felt re-inspired, and energized to move ahead, to continue driving meaningful change in the community. And now, looking ahead, we invite you to join us in our journey. Your support—whether through donations, sponsorships, volunteer work, or advocacy—can help us amplify our impact and transform more lives. Together, let’s work toward a future where every individual and community thrive with dignity and respect.

What a day! On January 11, 2024, there was a bit of ‘Crane Commotion’ happening at South Main Street in downtown Phillipsburg. The crew started bright and early at 6:30 a.m., and by the end of the day, an entire 3-bedroom, 2-bath home was placed. It wasn’t move-in ready yet, but all the outside structure of exterior walls were in place, giving the feel of all the good bones a good home starts with.

This monumental event marked the culmination of a remarkable partnership between Norwescap and Warren County Habitat for Humanity (WCHFH). Thanks to funding secured through the 2023 Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit (NRTC) program from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA), and Norwescap’s ongoing collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, a single-family home is taking shape in the heart of Phillipsburg’s NRTC district.
The partnership between Norwescap and Habitat for Humanity is a shining example of how unity and shared vision can transform communities. The project showcases the efficiency and quality of modular home construction, offering a cost-effective solution without compromising on durability or aesthetics. Modular homes, like the one being built in Phillipsburg, are prefabricated off-site and assembled on location, resulting in faster build times and reduced construction waste.

But don’t be deceived by the ease at which this project appeared to have come about! The details in planning, funding, partnering, and preparing the family are immense. This endeavor required the support and collaboration of various stakeholders, including local businesses and financial institutions like PNC, Provident Bank, and Valley National Bank, who generously contributed tax credits to Norwescap’s NRTC projects.
The dedication and commitment of volunteers and community members cannot be overstated. From laying the foundation to raising the roof, every step of the construction process was a labor of love and a testament to the power of partnership. Behind the scenes countless individuals brought their expertise and passion to the project, ensuring a success in building communities.
As the home takes shape, it symbolizes more than just a place to live—it represents hope, opportunity, and the American dream. For Jacob, the future homeowner and single father of three young boys, this home signifies a new chapter filled with promise and possibility. Through Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program, Jacob and his family will not only have a roof over their heads but also the opportunity to build equity and stability for the future.

This project is a testament to the tireless efforts of Norwescap, Habitat for Humanity, and the entire Phillipsburg community. Together, they have demonstrated the transformative power of partnership and the collective impact that can be achieved when individuals and organizations come together for a common cause. As we look ahead to the Home Dedication Ceremony planned for Spring 2024, we celebrate not just the completion of a house but the realization of dreams and the beginning of a brighter future for Jacob and his family.

The origins of Black History Month can be traced back to the efforts of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a Black historian, and educator, who, in 1926, established “Negro History Week” to promote the study of Black history in American schools. The second week of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both of whom had a profound impact on African American history.
Over time, Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month, officially recognized in various countries. It provides an opportunity for people to learn about and appreciate the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the Black community, fostering understanding, respect, and equality. Throughout February, various events, educational programs, and initiatives take place to commemorate and explore Black history and its ongoing significance.
At Norwescap, our mission revolves around strengthening communities by creating pathways that enhance the lives of those facing economic challenges, and our vision is to contribute to the development of a community that turns poverty into opportunity.
Established in 1965 during the Johnson administration’s “War on Poverty” and inspired by the advocacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. The mission and vision of Norwescap align with the origins and purpose of Black History Month. Seeking to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Black individuals and communities, acknowledging their resilience and achievements despite historical and systemic challenges. Norwescap’s mission to strengthen communities by creating pathways that enhance the lives of those facing economic challenges directly addresses the disparities and economic struggles that many Black individuals have historically faced.
As we observe Black History Month, it provides us at Norwescap with a special occasion to celebrate and acknowledge the remarkable contributions, achievements, and rich history of Black individuals. By recognizing and honoring this history, we aim to foster a sense of inclusivity and diversity not only within our organization but also within the communities we are privileged to serve.
NORWESCAP IS EMBRACING BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND SO CAN YOU!
In honor of Black History Month, our Traditions Family Success Center and Pathways 2 Prosperity programs have opportunities for individuals to volunteer or engage in the Black History Month activities happening right here at Norwescap! The Norwescap Traditions Family Success Center provides a range of programs and services dedicated to supporting families in Warren County, fostering their success and well-being. The goal is to enhance the quality of life for both children and adults, strengthening families and communities. Through empowerment and assistance, we strive to enable every family to thrive. Family Partners collaborate with individuals and families, assisting them in identifying their needs and facilitating connections to the resources available to them. Traditions Family Success Center will host Virtual Family Night, Trivia & Games, Family Craft Night!, Let’s get Creative!, and Movies on Main! All in honor of Black History Month.

Our Pathways 2 Prosperity program is hosting, EPIC Youth Building an Anti-Racist World and EPIC Art Gallery.
We, in our Pathways 2 Prosperity program, are thrilled to announce the upcoming events – EPIC Youth Building an Anti-Racist World and the EPIC Art Gallery.
EPIC Youth Building an Anti-Racist World is a gathering for teens aged 13-18 interested in activism and the arts. We meet every Tuesday from 6-8pm to share dinner and engage in dialogue while creating art that celebrates diversity, uniqueness, and equality. This group is all about Education, Participation, Intention, and Courage (EPIC).
Additionally, we invite you to join us for the EPIC Art Gallery on February 27th from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm at the Sparta United Methodist Church, 71 S. Sparta Avenue, Sparta, NJ 07871. This groundbreaking program aims to empower BIPOC (Black, indigenous, and people of color) youth and allies in our local community to confront racism through education, dialogue, and artistic expression.
The EPIC Art Exhibition will showcase the creative works of these youths, and it will travel to schools, organizations, and faith-based congregations throughout Sussex County. This initiative engages students, teachers, staff, and community members in the anti-racist movement, emphasizing the enduring relevance of Dr. King’s message. We are grateful for the support of the MLK Foundation via the New Jersey Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, making EPIC possible. Join us in building an anti-racist world through Education, Participation, Intention, and Courage (EPIC).
These activities can help educate individuals about the historical significance of Black History Month, highlight the contributions of Black individuals, and create spaces for dialogue and understanding. We can’t wait to see you there!
NORWESCAP BOARD ADVOCACY COMMITEE FOR ANTI-RACIST WORK

Our Norwescap Board comprises 15 dedicated individuals, each representing the five counties in New Jersey where the majority of our services are based. Our board operates on a tripartite structure, ensuring equal representation from the communities we serve, which includes current or former program participants, as well as at-large members and individuals nominated by local officials.
One distinctive aspect of our board is the creation of a sub-section known as the Board Advocacy Committee for Anti-Racist Work. This committee is committed to fostering anti-racist initiatives within our organization. As part of their efforts, they have established a book club. For the month of February, the committee is delving into “The Sum of Us” by Heather McGhee, using this insightful read to further their understanding and engagement in anti-racist work. This initiative reflects our commitment to continuous learning and growth for a more inclusive community.
WHAT IS GOING ON IN HUNTERDON COUNTY?
Norwescap is not alone in marking Black History Month. The NAACP of Hunterdon County, Flemington Borough Council, Love Flemington, and the Hunterdon County Anti-Racism Coalition, are gearing up to celebrate and commemorate Black History Month. This event will feature an exploration of African American history and arts with honorary presenters Princess Gamble from Howard University, along with Elaine Buck, Beverly Mills, and Iby lkotidem.

Embracing the new year creates a flurry of promises and resolutions. The only place you’re going to find a greater flurry is in the swirling of chilly snowflakes we witness outside our January windows. As winter creates a longing for warmer days of sunshine, may our longings to succeed at a New Year’s Resolution run as strong. Here is a great blog for you, compliments of Norwescap. Whether your goal is to walk more, chisel those washboard abs, or shed that last 10 pounds, Norwescap believes there’s another option to transform your year – the enriching world of volunteering. Yes, we might be a bit biased as an organization that attributes much of our success to the support of volunteers, but by the end of this blog, we hope to spark a bias in you too.
So, in 2024, while many were googling weight loss tips and vacation spots, we were on a different quest putting in keyword searches like: “volunteering benefits,” “psychological effects of volunteering,” and “health impact of volunteer work.” What we found was nothing short of fantastic! Lists, articles, scientific studies, and social experiments all shouted one consensus: Volunteering is great! And just for you, we’ve condensed this treasure trove of information into our Top 10 Benefits of Volunteering list here:

1. Boosted Happiness – Did you know that volunteering has been linked to increased levels of serotonin and dopamine, the “feel-good” neurotransmitters? When you lend a helping hand, your brain rewards you with a natural high, leading to a brighter mood and improved overall well-being.
To see what a ‘brighter mood’ looks like in action, you can get a daily dose by following our social media feeds! The Norwescap Facebook and Instagram channels show glimpses of all the smiles occurring across our programs as they Create Opportunities! Also watching our videos on YouTube. At Norwescap, you’ll witness the Smile-Making that happens as a byproduct of our work.
2. Stress Reduction – Engaging in volunteer work acts as a stress buster. The sense of purpose and fulfillment derived from making a positive impact can significantly reduce stress levels, promoting a healthier mental state. So if “Reducing Stress” was one of your resolutions for 2024, it’s time to look into Norwescap’s Volunteer Opportunities.

3. Physical Health Perks – Believe it or not, volunteering isn’t just good for the soul—it’s a workout for the body too. Many volunteer activities involve physical tasks, helping to keep you active and fit while contributing to a cause you care about.
Mark your calendars for Earth Day! Norwescap Community Development hosts an Annual Community Day of Action to celebrate this national holiday. Neighborhood Cleanup:

4. Social Butterfly Transformation – Volunteering can be a social extravaganza! Whether you’re working with a team at a local food pantry or collaborating on community projects, the connections you make can lead to lasting friendships and an expanded support network.
At Norwescap, Corporate Teams have come out for specific projects and gained so much more than what they anticipated. Take a look at some of those projects by perusing our Facebook posts here: Norwescap on Facebook.

5. Increased Self-Esteem – Who would of thought? It’s like therapy! Ok, we’re not claiming that, but we did find plenty of research that bearswitness to the positive impact that your volunteer efforts can have on your self-esteem. Knowing that you’ve made a difference in someone’s life cultivates a sense of accomplishment and boosts confidence.

6. A Course in Mindfulness: – Volunteering often involves being present and in-the-moment, fostering mindfulness. Whether you’re teaching, planting trees, or assisting in a community event, the immersive experience can enhance your ability to stay present and appreciate the now.
There’s no more experience in being present than that of being surrounded by the bubbling uplifted spirit of little ones! Have you ever considered being a Celebrity Reader in one of our Head Start classrooms? We are currently scheduling for the week of Read Across America, a national holiday enforcing the value of education and ceebarting a favorite children’s books author, Dr. Sueess’s birthday.
Be a part of our Head Start and Early Head Start programs by volunteering to read to children during Read Across America in early March 2024. 7. Learning Extravaganza – Every volunteering opportunity is a chance to acquire new skills. Whether it’s leadership, communication, or problem-solving, the diverse experiences gained while volunteering can serve as a real-world classroom.

A great learning opportunity may be found in our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. You can sign up to become a VITA Volunteer all year long and gain vital tax prep training provided by the IRS. 8. The Fountain of Youth!? – Studies suggest that volunteering may contribute to a longer, healthier life. The positive effects on mental and physical health, coupled with a sense of purpose, create a potent elixir for a fulfilling and extended life. This IS more promising than wrinkle cream!
While we’re on the topic of longevity, let us consider that one common denominator amongst us – aging! It’s a path we’re all on and no amount of wrinkle cream is going to stop it. A great action step you can take as a volunteer might be supporting our senior citizens. You can help the Norwescap Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) in providing companionship and support to seniors through services like “Friendship at Heart.” Be a Friendly Visitor, Telephone Reassurance, Senior Cents, or Grocery Shopper volunteer. At Norwescap, we believe that food security should never be a choice between putting food on the table or paying rent. On September 27th, we celebrated a momentous occasion with the unveiling of our newly renovated Food Bank Annex at 201 Broad Street, Phillipsburg. This renovation is not just about bricks and mortar; it represents a 40% increase in our ability to combat food insecurity in our community. That will translate to the equivalent of more than 2.2 million meals provided throughout our communities next year! And, we aren’t just increasing the quantity of food we can store and distribute; we have nearly doubled our refrigerator and freezer capacity, allowing us to provide more high-quality, nutrition-rich proteins, dairy products, and produce to support our neighbors’ health and well-being.
A Cornerstone of Hope
The Norwescap Food Bank is more than just a place to collect, store, and distribute food; it represents a lifeline for many families and individuals facing significant challenges, right here in the communities we serve. The Norwescap Food Bank is just one facet of our extensive range of diverse yet comprehensive services, all aimed at providing vital resources and long-term support to those in need.

The transformation of our Food Bank Annex was made possible through a generous grant from the New Jersey Department of Agriculture. This grant, part of an unprecedented investment made by the State Legislature in food security, allowed us to undertake these significant renovations debt-free – ensuring that every dollar donated by our generous supporters goes directly to putting food on the tables of those who need it most.
Honoring Those Who Stand with Us
At our Ribbon Cutting ceremony, we were honored by the attendance of distinguished guests who stand united in the fight against food insecurity. Those present included Senator Doug Steinhardt, Assemblyman John DiMaio, County Commissioner Director Lori Ciesla, County Commissioner James Kern, County Prosecutor James Pfeiffer, Mayor Todd Tersigni, Phillipsburg Council members, Norwescap’s Board of Directors, and our dedicated Food Bank staff, as well as many additional devoted Norwescap staff.
The event was marked by heartfelt remarks from key figures who played pivotal roles in our journey to enhance food security:

The event was marked by heartfelt remarks from key figures who played pivotal roles in our journey to enhance food security:
Mark Valli, CEO of Norwescap, welcomed everyone with warmth and discussed the growing demand for food assistance.
Phillipsburg Mayor Todd Tersigni expressed unwavering support for Norwescap and its mission.
Jane Asselta, New Jersey State Director for Rural Development, USDA, highlighted the infrastructure investments that made this renovation possible.
Lisa Weber, Senior Director of Food Security & Health Equity at Norwescap, emphasized the crucial need for food security in New Jersey and how this renovation bolsters our ability to provide nutritious food to those in need.
Community Partners Share Their Stories
Some of the most moving words of the day were provided by Jeannine Gorman, Executive Director of Flemington Food Pantry, and Scott Savokinas, Director of The Lord’s Pantry in Hackettstown, as they shared their direct experiences running neighborhood food pantries and the impact of Norwescap in providing healthier choices to those they serve. It gave the audience a closer connection to the people we are working so hard for, and the purpose at the core of that work.
>>>Be sure to view our video on YouTube for a summary of this event:
Field Representative Kristen Doran from US Congressman Tom Kean’s office presented a Certificate of Commemoration on behalf of the office, and Mark Valli closed the ceremony with excerpts from a letter from Governor Phil Murphy.

A Collective Effort for Greater Impact
While Craig J. Coughlin, Speaker of the Assembly, was unable to attend, his support for addressing hunger and nutrition in New Jersey is well-recognized.
The culmination of the ceremony was the cutting of the bright blue ribbon that adorned the entrance to the Annex. Dignitaries lined up, and as Mark Valli cut the ribbon, there was an outpouring of cheers and applause, symbolizing a significant step towards boosting food security in our region.
Critical Improvements for a Brighter Future
Among the critical improvements made to the Food Bank Annex, expanded storage capacity tops the list. With more storage options, we can now offer those in need a wider variety of healthier foods, with greater nutritional value. Examples of farm fresh produce; succulent peaches and crisp apples, that stood-in as decorations for the event are also the real-life examples of balanced diets and choice-method of distribution that Norwescap and our partners are seeking, giving not-only better health outcomes but more dignity to those needing resources from a food pantry.

Responding to Growing Needs
This renovation is our response to the surging issue of food insecurity in New Jersey. As Lisa Weber mentioned, “370,000 residents of Hunterdon, Sussex, and Warren counties live in food insecure households, with the need up 21% this year compared to 2022.”
Top Priorities for Norwescap Food Bank
Lisa Weber also outlined the top four priorities for the Norwescap Food Bank:
- Increase the Volume: Provide more food and essential items like diapers and feminine products to meet the high level of need.
- Elevate Mix and Nutritional Quality: Focus on providing healthier options and nutritionally balanced food.
- Integrate Food, Nutrition, and Health Strategies: Leverage the full spectrum of Norwescap programs to promote food security and health equity.
- Increase Partnership, Collaboration, and Innovation: Collaborate with partners to address food insecurity comprehensively.

Expanding Our Capacity for Greater Impact
This renovation brings dramatic changes, including:
- A 50% increase in capacity for storing shelf-stable food.
- Doubling of freezer and cold storage capacity.
- A functional loading dock for cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable food delivery.
- Purchase of a second truck to increase delivery capacity and service.
- Our goal is to increase meal distribution by 40-45%, from 1.6 million to 2.2 million meals.

A Bright Future Ahead
Norwescap’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony represents a significant step towards a brighter future where food security is within everyone’s reach. We are committed to making a lasting impact on our community and providing essential assistance to those in need.
Join Us in the Fight Against Hunger
As we move forward, we want to express our gratitude to all our partners, donors, and supporters who have stood with us in this journey. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that no one in our community goes to bed hungry.

In a world of such abundance, it’s a sobering reality that millions of people, both globally and locally, struggle with the harsh reality of food insecurity. According to Feeding America, 812,440 people in New Jersey are food insecure – and 197,280 of them are children. That’s 1 out of 11 people, and 1 in 10 children, without consistent access to adequate food. Covid and its aftermath have exacerbated the struggles that many of our neighbors were already facing, often forcing them to sacrifice buying healthy, nutritious food in order to pay rent and other bills.
Norwescap has worked alongside our sister Feeding America food banks, Community Food Bank of NJ, Fulfill, Food Bank of South Jersey, and Mercer Street Friends, to advocate and engage our legislators and partners across the state in advancing actions to bolster food security. The creation of New Jersey’s first-in-the-nation Office of the Food Security Advocate underscores our State’s commitment to coordinating the administration of food insecurity programs, advocating for individuals facing food insecurity, and developing new policy initiatives to combat hunger. In fiscal year 2023, New Jersey allocated an unprecedented amount of funds to support the critical work of eliminating food security – including unprecedented investments in SNAP, School Lunches and New Jersey’s five major food banks – helping to drive resources to meet the growing need for food and nutritional support all over our state. But there is still much work to be done, and along with our partners and supporters, Norwescap is committed to expanding our reach and efforts to ensure nobody has to go hungry in our community.

Hunger is not just a statistic; it’s a complex issue that affects countless lives across the world, including thousands of families right here in our community. It takes action on every level to work towards our vision of ALL our neighbors having access to fresh, healthy foods – proteins, dairy, fruits and vegetables – and other staples, every single day of the year.
September is Hunger Action Month
September is Hunger Action Month, a time when communities, organizations, and individuals come together to raise awareness and take meaningful steps toward eradicating food insecurity. Norwescap stands at the heart of this movement, with our Food Bank in Phillipsburg serving as a beacon of hope and a lifeline for more than 100 partner pantries, shelters, day care centers, and other feeding sites throughout Warren, Sussex, and Hunterdon counties in New Jersey. Together with our partners at the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, Fulfill, Mercer Street Friends, and the Food Bank of South Jersey, we have a vision to end hunger in our great state. Let’s delve into the significance of Hunger Action Month, the vital role of our Norwescap Food Bank, and how together, we can lead the charge against food insecurity in our region.

The Origin and Significance of Hunger Action Month
Hunger Action Month has a story rooted in purpose and determination. Originating from Feeding America, the largest hunger-relief organization in the United States, Hunger Action Month was conceived to shine a spotlight on the alarming rates of food insecurity that persist even in developed nations. The goal is simple: to inspire action, raise awareness, and generate support for initiatives that combat hunger.
Global and Local Impact of Food Insecurity
It’s easy to think of hunger as a problem that only affects those outside of our sphere, but the truth hits closer to home than we might realize. In New Jersey alone, countless families, children, and seniors struggle to access regular, nutritious meals. Hunger isn’t just about an empty stomach; it’s linked to poorer health outcomes, compromised educational opportunities, and the perpetuation of cycles of poverty.

The Power of Collective Action and Systemic Change
One person’s actions might seem small, but when multiplied by the power of collective effort, they can create waves of change. Hunger Action Month underscores the strength of unity, as people from all walks of life unite to amplify their voices and make a tangible impact. Remember, it’s not just about putting food on the table; it’s about addressing the root causes of food insecurity, advocating for policy changes, and building a more just and equitable society.
From Individuals to Systemic Transformations
Every donation, every volunteer hour served, and every dollar contributed has a ripple effect that goes beyond the immediate impact. These individual actions lay the foundation for systemic transformations. They prioritize food security, encourage businesses to engage in responsible practices, and foster a culture of empathy and social responsibility. In essence, Hunger Action Month bridges the gap between personal actions and the grander vision of a world where no one has to worry about where their next meal will come from.

So, this September, during Hunger Action Month, let’s remember that our efforts—no matter how small—contribute to a greater movement. Here are 5 action steps you can do to be a part of Hunger Action Month with Norwescap:

1. Put Your Feet on the Ground to Make Steps
Put your feet on the ground to make steps towards food security in your community! ShopRite of Hunterdon County is once again hosting the upcoming Race for Hunger on Sunday, September 17th, 2023 at the picturesque Deer Path Park, located at 120 W Woodschurch Rd, Flemington, NJ 08822. This event benefiting Norwescap’s Food Bank aims to raise awareness about food security in Norwescap neighborhoods and the broader community while promoting health and wellness through a fun-filled, health-focused event. Join us for Shop Rite of Hunterdon’s 5k Run for Hunger by registering at RunSignUp here: ShopRite of Hunterdon County Run for Hunger (runsignup.com)

2. Contribute to Leverage the Power of a Food Bank
Your monetary donations make a world of difference. Food banks have a unique advantage in stretching dollars further due to economies of scale, established relationships with suppliers, and logistical efficiency. Norwescap’s Food Bank can purchase the items our pantry partners need most in bulk at reduced prices, securing more meals per dollar than an individual can at a local store. We can access surplus and donated food items from various sources, further maximizing the impact of every dollar. Every donated dollar is optimized to provide the most meals possible, making a cost-effective and efficient means of addressing food insecurity on a larger scale. Donate today at this link: Donate (norwescap.org)
3. Be the Change Messenger
Help us raise awareness about the issue of hunger. Share these impactful ideas with friends and family to inspire them to join our cause. Become a voice for those facing food insecurity over your social networks. Follow, Like and Share Norwescap’s social posts while staying informed about the critical hunger-related issues. Find us on Facebook: Norwescap Facebook and on Instagram: Norwescap New Jersey (@norwescap) • Instagram photos and videos and on YouTube: Norwescap – YouTube
Join the conversation using #HungerActionMonth and #OneNorwescap.

4. Take the Wheel & Be a Food Drive Champion!
Be the driving force for change in your workplace or neighborhood by organizing a food drive. Collect healthy, non-perishable items and be a lifeline for families in our community. Visit https://staging.norwescap.org/what-we-do/health-and-nutrition/food-bank/#fooddrive to find out how you can host your own Food Drive to donate to Norwescap Food Bank.
5. Try a “Day in the Life”
Experience a day with a food budget of $4.16. That is the daily average for someone receiving SNAP benefits. It’s an eye-opening way to understand the daily struggles of those facing food insecurity.

As the school bells quieted down back in June and the sun started to warm our communities with all that summer offers, we at Norwescap knew that for many children, the end of the school year brought the promise of freedom…but also the worry that they may not have enough to eat during the break. Thousands of kids in our neighborhoods rely on free breakfast and lunch programs provided in their schools, so summer vacation can be a time of stress and financial strain for many families. That’s why, for the past 18 years, Norwescap has embarked on a mission to make sure no child in need goes without a nutritious meal during the summer months. Our Summer Feeding Program has become an embodiment of hope and nourishment for thousands of children, creating a lifeline of community support each summer.
The Norwescap History of Summer Feeding Support
Since 2005, Norwescap has joined hands with the Phillipsburg School District and Maschio’s Food Service Company to serve over 3,000 free lunches to children in Phillipsburg each summer. These meals are more than just sustenance; they are a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion. Supported by our partners and the community, these lunches include a delicious variety of healthy options, from crispy chicken wraps to yogurt, bagels with cream cheese, and an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. And who could forget the beloved pizza day every Thursday, generously provided by Rocco’s Pizzeria!! It is always a day of celebration, reminding us that even in the face of challenges, simple things can bring great joy.

More Than Meals: A Safe Haven
But Norwescap’s Summer Feeding Program goes beyond the plate. At three open sites in Phillipsburg, including the Phillipsburg Housing Authority Community Room, Firth Youth Center, and Norwescap Traditions Family Success Center, children not only enjoy well-rounded meals but also engaging activities such as games, crafts, and story time. It is our holistic approach that a nourished body and soul creates an unforgettable summer experience for these children.
A Sonata of Partnerships
Our Summer Feeding Program is a testament to the incredible impact that partnerships can achieve. We extend our deepest gratitude to our collaborators at Phillipsburg Housing Authority, Firth Youth Center, and Norwescap Traditions Family Success Center for opening their doors and providing this safe haven for our young ones. The unwavering support of Maschio’s Food Services, Inc. and the Phillipsburg School District is instrumental in making this program a resounding success year after year. The Norwescap Food Bank team, at the helm of this initiative since 2005, continues to touch lives and support the health and well-being of thousands of children through this free lunch program.

Together, we weren’t just nourishing bodies; we were spreading joy and building a stronger, more resilient community.

A Reminder for Hunger Action Month
As the summer program drew to a close, we reflected on the partnerships that allowed us to provide free meals to families throughout the season. September is Hunger Action Month, a time to raise awareness and advocate for an end to hunger. While we razor-sharpen our focus on these efforts through September, it’s essential to remember that families are facing food insecurity challenges every day of the year. We must continue to stand in solidarity with everyone who is experiencing food insecurity, acknowledging their struggles, and offering our unwavering support.
Together, we made a difference, one family at a time, this past summer season… and here at Norwescap, we were committed to serving our neighbors and always striving to help EVERYONE in our community succeed and thrive EVERY DAY.

As September ushers in the back-to-school season, our social media feeds are all fluttering with pictures of excited children, backpacks slung over their shoulders, and smiles stretching from ear to ear. At Norwescap, we join in this joyful chorus, but we have an extra reason to celebrate – our incredible Head Start and Early Head Start programs.
These programs are more than just educational initiatives; they are nurturing environments where young minds blossom. To capture the essence of what makes our Head Start students excited about coming back to school, we asked them a simple question: “What do you love most about coming back to school?” Their answers, as you’ll soon discover, are as heartwarming as they are adorable. Quotes are from our 3 and 4 year old students. (Photos are not matched to the child being quoted)

Angelise – “Playing with toys”
For Angelise, the allure of school lies in the promise of playtime. It’s not just any play, but the kind of imaginative, creative play that only childhood can conjure. In the world of Head Start, toys become tools for learning, and every moment is an opportunity to explore, grow, and have fun.
Unique – “I like to play with my friends.”
Unique’s response highlights the importance of social connections in early childhood. At Norwescap, we recognize that learning is a social endeavor. Building friendships and learning to work and play together are fundamental aspects of our programs. Its where lifelong bonds are formed.

Jack – “I like to go on the bus.”
Jack’s excitement is evident when he talks about the school bus. For many children, the school bus is a magical vessel that transports them to a world of knowledge and adventure. It’s a symbol of independence and a journey toward new horizons.
Izahna – “I like to go on the BIG playground.”
Izahna’s excitement for the big playground is contagious. It’s not just about physical activity; it’s about discovering the world, making friends, and developing a sense of self. Our Head Start programs offer safe and engaging outdoor spaces where children can grow, explore, and make lasting memories.

Jaxson – “Play cars!”
Jaxson’s love for school is intertwined with his passion for play cars. In our Head Start programs, play is an essential part of the curriculum. It’s through play that children develop crucial skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity. Jaxson’s enthusiasm reminds us that learning is a joyful adventure.
Bella – “I like to play on the carpet”
When Bella points out ‘the carpet’ for playtime, this showcases the diverse learning environments we provide. Whether it’s the classroom carpet for group activities or the cozy reading corner, our Head Start programs offer a rich tapestry of experiences that cater to each child’s unique needs.

Noah – “I like to play everything I want to.”
Noah’s answer is a testament to the freedom and autonomy children experience in our Head Start classrooms. It’s a place where their interests are honored, and they are encouraged to explore and learn at their own pace. In this supportive environment, the possibilities are endless.

Join Us in Celebrating a Bright Future
These heartwarming responses from our Head Start students remind us of the magic that happens within our programs. It’s a place where play is purposeful, where learning is fun, and where children are nurtured in mind, body, and spirit.
As we celebrate the back-to-school season, let’s also celebrate the incredible work being done by Norwescap and our dedicated educators. Together, we are creating a brighter future for the youngest members of our community, one joyful moment at a time.

Family Fun Day: A Blast of Joy for Everyone!
The festivities kicked off with Family Fun Day, a day brimming with smiles, laughter and endless adventures – and thankfully, hardly a drop of rain, despite unpredictable forecasts! From classic summer activities like volleyball and face painting to unique experiences like the thrilling “Egg-plosion” hunt and OMGBubbles, there was something for everyone to enjoy. And let’s not forget the raffle prizes that had families buzzing with excitement, including tickets to popular attractions like Great Adventure and Dorney Park. Sunset Soirée: What a ‘Night to Remember’!
The forecast on June 24th hardly guaranteed a sunset, so the evening portion of NorwesFest was reset indoors in the barn at Ort Farms, which was was transformed into an elegant and enchanting space complete with sparkling lights, lovely wildflowers, and beautifully set communal tables. Guests were welcomed with signature cocktails, local brews, and a delicious farm-to-table spread; some indulged in friendly bocce ball and cornhole competitions, while others enjoyed the solar-powered carousel that brought out the childlike joy in everyone.

The mood for the evening was set with upbeat and nostalgic swing, big band, and pop-swing tunes by the incredible 17-piece Summer Swing Orchestra, led by vocalist Kevin Grey. Our Board President Jim Buehler shared his perspective on the impact of Norwescap’s mission on thousands of families right in our own communities, and CEO Mark Valli and CDO Heather Thompson took the stage as well, surprising and thrilling the audience with their musical talents. The highlight of the evening was Donna DiBenedetto’s inspirational story; her journey with Norwescap, her positive outlook for her future, and her commitment to transforming her lessons learned into support for others, brought Norwescap’s work to life in a very real way. You can watch her powerful speech on our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/AUxihmBtcBc. Goosebumps, anyone?

Norwescap, a leading nonprofit organization committed to empowering individuals and strengthening communities, hosted its highly anticipated fourth annual NorwesFest Family Fun Day on June 22, along with their signature Sunset Soirée.
The event, held at Ort Farms in Long Valley, featured two very different and important segments: the Family Fun Day and the Sunset Soirée. This gathering brought together community members of all ages for a day filled with excitement and entertainment, raising vital funds to support the programs and services at Norwescap.

Family Fun Day: An Abundance of Activities
The day began on a very warm note; however, despite the heat, there was a steady stream of families over the next few hours opting for some fun on the farm. Family Fun Day offered an abundance of activities, including classic summer favorites like volleyball and face-painting, alongside unique experiences such as the hand-crafted solar carousel, the “Egg-plosion” hunt, OMGBubbles, ‘faux’ axe-throwing, and plenty of arts and crafts. The apple cannon and the cow train, perennial favorites, did not disappoint. Welcome additions were a misting tent and a kiddie pool filled with cool water and big sponges to provide a break from the heat.

Live music with a country flair by the Honky Tonk Scoundrels filled the air, while attendees happily participated in a myriad of activities, including a “Balloon Pop” fundraiser guaranteeing prizes such as tickets to Six Flags Great Adventure, Wild West City, and Adventure Aquarium.

The Seeing Eye Puppy demonstration, normally a crowd favorite, was notably absent due to the oppressive heat. However, this did not dampen the spirits of the attendees, who enjoyed the day’s festivities with enthusiasm.
The success of Family Fun Day was made possible by the efforts of dozens of volunteers who graciously offered their time and support.

Sunset Soirée: An Evening of Elegance and Enchantment
As the sun began its descent, NorwesFest transitioned into the enchanting Sunset Soirée. The setting for the adults-only soirée was Ort Farms’ big red barn, transformed into a magical space with hundreds of twinkling lights strung along the ceiling. Blue tablecloths with burlap runners, wildflower bouquets, and votive candles graced the tables, creating an atmosphere of rustic elegance.

Guests indulged in a gourmet farm-to-table dinner, featuring refreshing appetizers like watermelon skewers drizzled with balsamic and feta, toasted crostinis topped with cool bruschetta, and an array of salads, roasted vegetables, fine salmon with dill dressing, and succulent chicken. As they dined, the 18-piece Summer Swing Orchestra with lead vocalist Kevin Grey serenaded the crowd with masterful renditions of timeless classics and popular hits, keeping everyone clapping, toe-tapping, smiling, and dancing.
